Is Your Cardio Working?

You already know the health benefits of regular cardio-vascular exercise. It keeps your heart healthy, your circulation system working and your body feeling great.

If you:

  1. aren’t seeing results equal to your efforts
  2. have hit a fitness plateau
  3. injured and still want to train
  4. would like to see better results,

there are a few things you should know about cardio.

While its true that cardio exercise can burn fat, it is important to know that muscle is the actual location where fat is burnt. If you aren’t working out in a way that protects, builds or holds muscle, you are restricting your bodies ability to burn fat. It helps to think of it as an equation:

Muscle = Metabolism

It is also important to know: there are two fuel sources in the body: sugar (glucose) and fat (the stored kind). Resistance training and cerebral function can only run on glucose.

Cardio vascular exercise can function using either glucose or fat, but will default to glucose if its available (its easier to access).

If your goal is to burn stored fat, you can maximise the benefits of your cardio-vascular workout by doing your resistance training before your cardio. This will use up the accessible glucose in your body so that your cardio work is burning stored fat as your body is forced to seek another fuel source.

Arranging your workouts in the other order (cardio followed by resistance training) actually sabotages your body’s ability to succeed. By using up your glucose stores with your cardio, not only have you not burnt fat, you’ve left your body with nothing to use for resistance training, limiting your results in this area as well. Limited results in your resistance training will limit your ability to burn fat.
